Liz Castro mentioned in her blog a few days ago that the New Kindle Previewer had the new KindleG embedded. So last night I made time to check it out and these are the things I found:
Suppose like me you publish for Smashwords and Amazon. Suppose you, like me, are growing tired of waiting for Smashwords and Amazon to bring their stalled negotiations to fruition. Suppose you format first for Smashwords and then like me use that document (with slight modifications) to make your input file for Amazon. Well, now I have discovered there may be an easier way.
I took one of my Smashwords .ePub books and put it into the new Kindle Previewer. Just as suggested by Liz, Kindle Previewer is a GUI for KindleGen.
1.From within Kindle Previewer, KindleGen Starts.
2.KindleGen renames the .epub file to a .zip and unpacks it.
3.KindleGen then marches through those files building an opf, ncx, html files for all the parts of your book, extracting the pictures, pulling the coverpage, building a stylesheet.css, and a titlepage.xhtml.
4.Finally Kindlegen compiles all this into a .mobi file.
5. et Voila. Kindle Previewer displays you Kindle formatted .mobi file.
